Our Circulatory Function Diminishes As We Age

As we age, our body functions may diminish in effectiveness. For instance, diminishing circulatory functions may result in inefficient delivery of nutrients and oxygen to various parts of the body and the disposal of waste products from the body. As a result some of us will suffer from increase in blood pressure, having stones in the kidneys or in the gallbladder, or deposits of uric acids in the lower limbs leading to the condition called gout, and water retention in the legs leading to all kind of water retention problems.

Research has shown that most of these health conditions could be reduced by frequent consumption of the Misai Kucing extract. The tea prepared from the leaves of Misai Kucing provides the most convenient means of improving health and for the treatment of kidney, bladder inflammation, gout and diabetes.

Misai Kucing Helps Promote Healthy Circulation System

Frequent consumption of Misai Kucing tea seems to be beneficial for the stability of blood pressure. The herb contains phytochemicals that can cause the dilation (relaxation) of the organs and blood vesselswall muscles, thus it may also help in improving circulatory functions. Muscle relaxation of the blood vessels may help to absorb the pressure and increase blood flow. This effect is beneficial for the blood pressure control. The same explanation also applies to urination problems where the relaxation of ureteral muscles from the kidneys to the bladder is able to facilitate easier flow of urine as well as helping to flush out stone particles (Englert and Harnischfeger, 1992). A compound found in Misai Kucing extract called Methylripariochromene A has been shown to affect increased urinary flow and the excretion of sodium ions (Schut and Zwaving, 1993). The diuretic effect also explains the traditional use of Misai Kucing is not only for urinary tract problems but also for gout, kidney stones and high blood pressure.

Potential role in the treatment of cancer

Most recently, a group of researchers from Universiti Sains Malaysia has shown that Misai Kucing extract has a potential application in the treatment of cancer (news clippings, The Star and The Sun, 22 October 2009). The extract produced from the herb contains high antioxidant properties which have the ability to retard the further growth of blood vessels around the tumour cells. The growth of tumour cells depend completely on a supply of oxygen and food received from the blood stream. When cancer cells grow, they stimulate the growth of new blood vessels, and this is also how the cancer cells spread to other tissues and organs. This discovery is exciting particularly to the breast cancer patients who are currently on chemotheraphy treatments.
