If the result of your medical check-up shows that your LDL (bad cholesterol) is above the normal level, then what should you do? As you may already be aware, high cholesterol may increase your risk of heart attack and stroke. If you are looking for a natural alternative, now there is a natural product which can help reduce cholesterol – Red Yeast Rice.

What is Red Yeast Rice (RYR)?

RYR has been used for centuries in China as both food and medicine. It is made by fermenting a type of yeast called Monascus Purpureus over red rice. RYR contains a compound called monacolin K, that provides similar effects to the prescribed statin medications - stop the action of an enzyme in the body that helps make cholesterol.

Clinically Proven by Scientific Studies

One study by UCLA School of Medicine involved 83 people with high cholesterol levels. Those who took RYR over a 12 week period had lower levels of total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides compared to those taking placebo. HDL levels did not change in either study group.

Lower Cholesterol Naturally

A study presented to the American Heart Association showed that RYR lowered LDL cholesterol. In the study, 187 people had mild-to-moderately high levels of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. The study showed that taking RYR reduced total cholesterol by more than 16%, LDL by 21%, and triglycerides by 24%. HDL also went up by 14%.

In another 8-week study of 446 people with high cholesterol, those who took RYR had a drop in cholesterol levels compared to those who took placebo. Total cholesterol fell by 22.7%, LDL by 31%, and triglycerides by 34% in the red yeast rice group. HDL went up by 20% in the red yeast rice group as well.

Effective in Reducing Cholesterol Level Minus the Side Effects of Statins

RYR contains only minute and safe amounts of monacolin K as its cholesterol lowering effects are also boosted by other compounds in RYR, including plant sterols, monounsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants and isoflavones.  Therefore, it does not come with the side effects of statins such as muscle aches, memory loss, unexplained tiredness, numbness of limbs etc.
